Aéroport Marseille Provence
Following 4.3% growth in passenger traffic in 2018, Aéroport Marseille Provence prepared an expansion plan to support the airport’s efforts of accommodating an anticipated 11 million passengers by 2025.
About this Project
- Location: Marseille, France
The plan to modernise the airport’s baggage handling system included reorganising Terminal 1 to become the core terminal connecting Halls 1, 2, 3, and 4 and centralizing all operational functions. The objective was to accommodate the escalating number of passengers, integrate cutting-edge sorting technology, and bolster overall system reliability. Throughout this process, a paramount concern was minimising operational disruptions.
The completed departure system comprises a check-in area with 75 check-ins, two 650m long cross-belt sorters with a total sorting capacity of 12,000 bags per hour, integrated Standard-3 hold-bag screening, a manual encode station, five makeup carousels, an early bag store with automatic sorting by flight, and a fully redundant electrical and automation architecture to ensure uninterrupted operation. Alstef Group’s proprietary BAGWARE software, encompassing BAGVIEW SCADA supervision software and BAGSORT – Sortation, Allocation, Control (SAC) software, facilitates secure, real-time monitoring and control. The completed arrivals system includes five new reclaim carousels.
Phase one of the Aéroport Marseille Provence baggage handling system project was completed in November 2023, with 56 check-ins and two sortation lines now in operation. Commissioning was achieved in just six months—a testament to the dedication of the 60-member Alstef Group team, whose commitment and professionalism were unwavering. Collaboration with subcontractors and the support of VINCI Construction and GTM SUD facilitated logistical efficiency and streamlined the project’s progression.
The final phases were completed mid-2024, enhancing passenger experience and airport operations. Alstef Group now supports the system with a renewable four-year maintenance contract. Alstef Group’s continued dedication to excellence and innovation underscores the project’s success and the significance of collaboration, technology, and steadfast commitment.
The Aéroport Marseille Provence baggage handling system project serves as a testament to Alstef Group’s capabilities in optimising airport operations while minimising the impacts of baggage system upgrades. The project showcases Alstef Group’s ability to deliver reliable and efficient solutions, underlined by timely completion and seamless collaboration. As the project advances, it symbolizes a significant stride in elevating passenger experiences and ensuring seamless airport operations.
